Several important features on these two vehicles are the same; both come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with close to identical power ratings, as well as standard all-wheel drive. Optional drivetrains, however, are where we see our first important difference. The Velar is available with a 3.0-liter I6 engine that produces 395 horsepower, but there is no optional drivetrain for the Q5. We should point out that there is an Audi model based on the Q5 that has more power: the SQ5. This comes with a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 362 horsepower, which is close to the amount you get from the Velar’s optional engine. However, this is still a different model, and it comes with more aggressive styling, as well as a more performance-oriented interior. If you want to add more power without sacrificing comfort or sophistication, the Velar is the obvious choice.

The Velar is a couple of inches longer than the Q5, which adds up to a surprisingly large cargo capacity advantage: 30.9 cubic feet versus 27.6 cubic feet in the Q5. But the most dramatic difference is fuel capacity. This isn’t normally a major factor when choosing a vehicle, but the difference also isn’t usually this dramatic. The gas tank in the Velar holds 22 gallons versus 17 in the Q5. With such similar engines, fuel economy is also similar; so a 5-gallon capacity difference adds up to a lot fewer stops at the gas station pretty quickly. You can also tow more than a thousand pounds more with the Velar, 5,511 pounds versus 4,400 pounds.

The Velar comes with quite a bit more standard equipment than the Q5, such as a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and a premium stereo system. But the real advantage of the Velar is how much better the customization options are. The Velar is offered with more paint colors, more wheel designs, more interior colors, and you actually have the option to choose different trim materials, a choice that Audi doesn’t offer. And while a premium stereo is standard on the Velar, you also have the option of an upgrade to a 1,300-watt Meridian system with 22 speakers, noticeably superior to the 685-watt Bang & Olufsen system with 16 speakers that you have the option of in the Q5.
