Range Rover Sport vs. BMW X6 Comparison

The Range Rover Sport is notable for its mix of performance, luxury, and a generous helping of style. It’s a mix that not many competitors even attempt, but one notable exception is the BMW X6. Mechanically, the X6 is very similar to the more mainstream X5, but with a more stylish body. Has BMW managed to get the formula right to take on the Range Rover Sport? We’ll have to take a closer look to see.

Range Rover Sport VS BMW X6

Both the Range Rover Sport and the X6 come with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. But despite the similar starting point, you’ll immediately notice a difference once you start looking to customize your vehicle. For one, the Range Rover Sport is offered in a choice of eight different variants, including special editions and the high-performance SV version. The X6 does also have a high-performance version, the X6 M Competition, and this is also powered by a 4.4-liter V8, but the total of three different variants for the X6 still falls short of the Range Rover Sport. And even though the standard engines and the range-topping V8s might be similar, there are more drivetrain options for the Range Rover Sport in total, including a plug-in hybrid drivetrain for which there is no equivalent from BMW. On top of that, the Range Rover Sport gives you more paint colors to choose from, as well as more interior color and material options. You can even choose from a full range of colors for your brake calipers, something you absolutely don’t get with BMW.

As we mentioned, the X6 exists to be a more stylized alternative to the X5 on which it’s based. That is indeed something the X6 accomplishes, but whether or not this is a good thing is debatable. This is literally the point, as BMW leans heavily into controversy when it comes to styling. It’s an attitude toward garnering attention that’s popular with middle schoolers, and it comes as no surprise that the X6 lacks the sophistication of the classic-but-modern good looks of the Range Rover Sport. The narrow appeal of the X6 is continued on the interior, where things like sport seats are standard equipment. Seats that are actually comfortable are available for the X6, along with leather upholstery, but unlike with the Range Rover Sport, these are optional extras. Ventilated seats are optional too, and so is a heated steering wheel. In all, it’s hard to spot just where the money goes on the X6.

Winner – Range Rover Sport

There is no cohesive vision for the BMW X6, it’s an SUV with the roofline from a coupe, a five-passenger daily-driver with an interior from a sports car. And your customization options are even more limited than they are on the mainstream X5. The Range Rover Sport offers clear advantages across a wide range of areas. And to top them all off, Land Rover Easton and our team of friendly professionals are on hand to help you find the Range Rover Sport that’s right for you.
