Land Rover Towing Capacity Guide
While a Land Rover is certainly an excellent way to travel in luxury, at the heart of every Land Rover is an extremely capable utility vehicle. They are exceptionally good off-road, and possess towing capabilities far better than competing vehicles. Land Rover also gives you a lot of different options for body styles, trims, and engines, which makes determining towing capacity difficult. Fortunately, we’ve assembled this helpful guide to help give you all the information you need in choosing the right Land Rover.
Range Rover Towing Capacities
The original luxury SUV, the Range Rover is the vehicle that taught us that an SUV could be capable off-road, but still be comfortable and have civilized manners on the road. And to this day it comes with some pretty impressive towing capabilities as well. There is both a short wheelbase version of the Range Rover and a long wheelbase, as well as several different trims. This might seem like it will make things confusing, but in reality, the only factor that affects towing capacity is the powertrain, so our chart will reflect that.

---|---|---|---|
P400 – 3.0-liter Turbocharged I6 | 395 @ 5500 | 406 lb-ft @ 2000 | 7,716 lbs |
P440 – 3.0-liter Turbocharged I6 | 434 @ 5500 | 406 lb-ft @ 1500 | 5,511 lbs |
P530 – 4.4-liter Twin-Turbo V8 | 523 @ 5500 | 553 lb-ft @ 1800 | 8,200 lbs |
Range Rover Sport Towing Capacities
A more performance-oriented version of the Range Rover, it might be tempting to think that the dramatic stying and higher top speed are indicators that the Range Rover Sport isn’t built so much for towing. But that’s why it’s good to have a chart like this, as the Sport is every bit as capable as a towing vehicle as the Range Rover when equipped with the same powertrain. This is even true of the base P360 powertrain, which isn’t offered on the Range Rover, but still has the same towing capacity as the P400. Once again, the powertrain is the only factor to consider with the Range Rover Sport.

P440 – 3.0-liter Turbocharged I6 | 434 @ 5500 | 457 lb-ft @ 1500 | 5,511 lbs |
Range Rover Velar Towing Capacities
Described by Land Rover as “the avant-garde Range Rover”, the Range Rover Velar serves as the fashion flagship of the brand. It boasts seriously attractive styling, and an interior that is as comfortable as it is aesthetically pleasing. But for all of this fashion, the Velar is still every bit a Land Rover, and towing capacities are noticeably higher than on competing vehicles, by quite a lot in some cases.

Range Rover Evoque Towing Capacity
The Range Rover Evoque delivers all of the style of the bigger Velar in a subcompact package. It was actually introduced before the Velar, and Land Rover’s decision to build a bigger version was based on the success of the Evoque. While this smaller SUV offers up the smallest towing capacity of any vehicle in the Land Rover lineup, it’s important to note that this is still much bigger than you’re likely to find in another subcompact SUV, or any SUV with a four-cylinder engine.

Discovery Towing Capacities
The Discovery is built to be versatile, with seating for 7 and incredibly high towing capacities. It balances utility, luxury, and price in a way that only Land Rover can do. It is second only to the Defender in off-road capability, and still looks exceptionally good while doing it. There are once again several different trim levels, but only two powertrain options, and these are what determine towing capacity. Although you will probably notice that the Discovery manages to tow a bit more than other models equipped with the same powertrains.

Discovery Sport Towing Capacities
Similar to the Range Rover Sport, the Discovery Sport is a performance-oriented version of the Discovery. It’s a bit smaller and faster than the regular Discovery, but still comes with plenty of interior space and off-road capability. It doesn’t offer as much towing capacity as several other Land Rover models, but it’s still well above average for its class.

Defender Towing Capacity
The ultimate off-roading Land Rover, the Defender is built with utility as the top priority. It is certainly comfortable, spacious, and equipped with some impressive tech. But it will still go where few other vehicles can. It is offered in three different wheelbase lengths, and it is the only Land Rover model where that will have an impact on towing capacity. So we have two different charts, one for the shorter wheelbases and one just for the Defender 130. It’s not a huge difference, all forms of the Defender have truly impressive towing capacities, but we still want to be sure to be exact.
