The Defender 110 and Mercedes-Benz G-Class aren’t the only off-road-ready luxury vehicles that you can buy, but they are the two that take off-roading the most seriously. Both are luxury civilian versions of military vehicles, and both offer an iconic look. But while these are important qualities that the two vehicles share, there is also a long list of important differences that one needs to be familiar with in order to make the right choice. There is no escaping the first major difference between these two vehicles: the price. The G-Class starts at more than double the price of the Defender 110. That’s a pretty big difference for the Mercedes to have to justify, and perhaps more importantly, it also makes a lot of G-Class owners reluctant to take the vehicle off-road. Obviously, this defeats the purpose of a vehicle like this, making the more robust trim lineup and lower starting price of the Defender 110 much more appealing. On the subject of off-road driving, there is one other big advantage for the Defender 110: ground clearance. This super ground clearance combines with the tighter turning circle on the Defender 110 to make for a vehicle that can go more places than the G-Class, which is the entire point of a vehicle like this.

Both vehicles come standard with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. The G-Class is smaller than the Defender 110, which is why the Defender 110 offers a third row of seats, but the G-Class doesn’t, so the 0-60 time that’s a couple of tenths of a second quicker is to be expected. But for those who want the highest-performance versions of whichever vehicle they choose, there are some seriously powerful upgrades. For the G-Class, that comes in the form of the AMG G 63, which comes with a 577-horsepower 4.0-liter V8. For the Defender, there is the Defender OCTA, which is powered by a 4.4-liter V8 producing 626 horsepower. For performance enthusiasts, that means a 3.8-second 0-60 time for the Defender and a 4.2-second 0-60 time for the G-Class. The OCTA is priced very close to the base G-Class trim, but it outperforms the much higher-priced AMG variant, which is a very solid advantage.

But the biggest advantage of the Defender 110 is versatility. There are lower-priced trims for really punishing adventure applications, or trims that put more emphasis on luxury and style. There are seating options, and the list of adventure-ready accessories available for the Defender 110 is far more extensive than what Mercedes offers. The Defender 110 can also out-tow the G-Class, letting you bring more gear with you off-road.

Winner – Defender 110

The G-Class is an icon, and a far better off-road machine than most luxury SUVs, but the Defender 110 is an extremely important exception to that rule. There’s no area where the G-Class outdoes the Defender 110. There is even the Defender OCTA, which is far more exclusive and stylish than the G-Class, despite costing the same.
