2026 Defender 110 vs. Lexus GX Comparison with Price, Specs, & Photos

The Defender is an off-road icon, serving as the go-to transportation over dirt and mud all over the world. And while there isn’t a lot of competition in the world of luxury off-roaders, Lexus has certainly thrown its hat in the ring with the GX. With a robust V6 and standard 4WD, it certainly seems like a formidable match, but how does it actually stack up to the reigning Defender 110 champion? Let’s find out.

The GX starts off with a price advantage over the Defender 110, but as we look closer, it doesn’t seem like much of an advantage after all. You get more horsepower from the standard engine in the X-Dynamic SE trim, and if you want even more, there is an available V8 that significantly turns up the power on tap, but there is no optional engine for the GX. The GX uses a double wishbone front suspension, which is far better than the strut suspension in most SUVs, but it doesn’t offer the same level of wheel articulation and suspension travel, important qualities for an off-road vehicle, as the sort and long arm suspension on the Defender 110. You can take more cargo with you on your off-road adventure with the Defender 110 as well, thanks to the larger cargo area.

The Defender 110 has a higher level of standard equipment, including popular options like a heated steering wheel and a vastly superior standard stereo system. Not only that, but adding non-standard equipment on the GX almost always requires upgrading to a whole different trim, so while rain-sensing wipers and adaptive suspension are available on the GX, they aren’t available on the GX 550 Premium trim. The wheel selection for each vehicle is another good example of this, with nine different options just for the Defender 110 trim we’re looking at here, while there is just one for this trim of the GX. There are other wheel designs for the GX available, but no individual trim offers any choice at all. Then there are the useful off-road features, things like an underbody ground view camera and fog lights, that come standard on the Defender 110, but aren’t available at all on the GX.

The Lexus GX might be more of an off-roader than most competitors, but it takes more than that to compete with the industry leader.
